Everyone has the sniffles, either from the flu, or the horrible cold going around, or the weird weather this winter, or just the wintertime blahs. Instead of Valentines, here's my love-letter to the common cold.

Bear is the MOST dramatic, and I feel a special kinship with this particular brand of woe-is-me melodrama. This time around, Bear is QUITE SICK and doesn't feel that his friend Mouse appreciates the gravity of the situation: reading happy books, singing cheerful songs, playing a banjo! Just disgraceful. If only Bear had the energy to explain to Mouse how wrong he is. Take heart, after a nice nap, Bear is feeling much better, and now it's Mouse's turn to feel just a bit droopy and sniffly.

George's mom is very confused. She keeps asking George to bark, and he makes noises... but they all are from the wrong animals! A trip to the vet clears up the problem, but does leave one lingering issue to be discovered on the last page. This one is always a kid-pleaser.

Tuesday Storytime: Teddy Bear Friends
And I forgot entirely to post last week's Storytime!
I love teddy bears. So many stories, so many possibilities. This time around we focused on friendship.

An oversized picture book with faux-naive art centered in a looming (yet unscary) forest.
I have used this book, and it's partner My Friend Bear many times before, but not since I've been reviewing. They're both adorable rhyming patter books that tell a sweet story of a pair of children (human and bear) losing their teddies in the woods, and what happens when there's a bit of a mix-up. Super sweet, super gentle, and a blast to read. Very quick story that feels solid and full, despite the short duration.
A Splendid Friend Indeed

Thick crayonish lines and bright primary colors make this a visual treat.
This book would be perfect for demonstrating body language. Bear never says a word (Duck has that market cornered) but it's beautifully obvious how he feels about the neverending attentions of his excitable friend. However, by the end, the irrepressible Duck has managed to break through Bear's shell, and the two friends hug it out. So adorable.

Tuesday Storytime: Animals Read Books
Because why not?
Three really long ones today, and a very active group, but the tone and the cadence of all of these was really good for a lovely quick flow. Two of these are first-time storytime books, and I'm really happy with how they read for a group. Nice to have more good books added to my backlist.
Wild About Books
Judy Sierra, illustrated by Marc Brown

Seussical rhymes and exuberant colored-pen spreads with lots of action and movement.
Molly the librarian accidentally drives the bookmobile into the zoo, and slowly introduces the resident animals to reading, to caring for books properly, and finally to creating their own works themselves. On the readers to writers angle, would go very well with Daniel Kirk's Library Mouse for an older group. This book is long, but juuust barely doable because of the trippy language, the packed and colorful pages, and how quickly the rhymes work (also I skipped the page of haiku).

Grumpy Bear and perky Mouse head off to the library, over Bear's strenuous (and ever louder) objections.
I admit to partly liking this book because I get to yell in the library and enjoy the horrified expressions of all the kids as I do. What can I say, get your thrills where you can! Bear promised Mouse that he would go to the library, but he's really regretting it. Mouse insists, but Bear ONLY wants a book about pickles, and gets very vocal about his not being happy about coming to the library in the first place. When he gets shushed by a pair of moms sitting in on storytime, he loses it for real, but a chipper librarian and Mouse's persistence win him over in the end. (Also, he gets a book about pickles, which helps.)

Weirdly-proportioned forest animals in scribbly environments remind me of a darker Steven Kellogg.
Every night the forest animal children settle into bed with a good book, until they start vanishing! Brave Eliza sets a trap for the book thief, figures out the problem, and works with the mysterious (and frankly adorable) Snatchabook to work out a better approach for the future. Cute, straightforward, and the rhyme sequence gets your tongue moving double-quick, which is very helpful for the last book of the day.

Picture Book Haul: A Library Book for Bear, Two Little Birds
We got so many new books in, and I liked most of them, but again, just going to feature my absolute favorites from the pile.

Bear and Mouse are back again, and this time they're off to the Library. Bear is really not interested - he has seven whole books at home already - what more does he need? And of course, once he gets there, he's even more determined not to be impressed: too many books, too many topics, and OF COURSE HE USES HIS QUIET VOICE!. Mouse is discouraged and agrees to head home, but the library storyteller saves the day with an excellent book about a brave bear and some pickles. Cute and sarcastic addition to my growing collection of storytime books about going to the library.

A beautiful and peaceful mix of painting and collage illustrates a gentle and nonfiction narrative of two orchard orioles from the Northeastern US across the country and the ocean to the Yucatan, and then back. Beautifully told, and the little birdies are so expressive. An author's note at the end explains their migration, and reminds readers and listeners to care for nature.

Tuesday Storytime: We're Beary Beary Sick.
I've had my annual sinus infection for the last two weeks, and I was actually going for a general "sniffles" theme. I was amazed that there are three good story-time appropriate books featuring sick bears. I suppose I shouldn't have been, and I couldn't resist the wordplay.
Sneeze, Big Bear, Sneeze!
Maureen Wright, illustrated by Will Hillenbrand

Bear is wandering the fall woods, and the personified Wind is messing with his mind by blowing things away every time he sneezes. Poor bear insists that it's his sneezes, and tries to fix the damage (tacking leaves back on trees with hammer and nails, stacking fallen apples on branches) while the Wind grows more and more upset with him, finally chasing him back to his cozy den.
Bear Feels Sick
Karma Wilson, illustrated by Jane Chapman

I love all of these books, Chapman's illustrations and Wilson's rhymes just fit so perfectly together into a happy warm fuzzy place where nothing bad ever happens. In this one, Bear is, obviously, sick, and his friends pull together to help him feel better. In the end, Bear is better, but the friends have all caught the bug, and now need care themselves.

Poor bear here looks almost rat-like at times, with his dolorous red schnozz and his weakly curled hands as fate and illness are bemoaned and overacted. I'm just tickled by the pictures. This Bear is DRAMATICALLY SICK. Perhaps DYING. Unfortunately, mouse is not suitably impressed by this terrible news, and insists on mundane comforting advice and companionship. What's a drama-bear to do? Perhaps DIE... or maybe just a nap. The ending here, like Bear Feels Sick, makes a point that the caretakers usually end up sick themselves, just when the sick-ee is feeling better.
